Falls FAQ

How long does my hair have to be to wear falls?
Falls tie in easily over a bun, a ponytail, or pigtails. Which means (for all you guys and gals with shorter hair), you at least have to be able to get your hair into sturdy pigtails or a ponytail to give the dreadfalls something to attach to.

How do I put in my falls?
Click here for step by step directions with pictures.

My bun is showing through my fall... how do I fix this?
After you have put your falls in, try placing your fall so it completely covers the bun. Then take your open-style bobby pins and slide them in through a dread or two pinning them to your bun. This way the dreads won't slide around as much or off your bun. Open-style bobby pins can be purchased in the LOX SHOP.

How do I care for my falls?
Here are some tips:

  1. Never hang your falls by the elastic bands (like hanging them on doorknobs, hooks etc.) This will weaken the elastic bands.
  2. Never tug or be reckless with your elastic bands, they are very strong but will not hold up to extreme abuse.
  3. Keep your falls in the protective plastic package I originally packed them in. This will protect your falls from dust and extreme humidity.
  4. If your falls become extra frizzy or sticky, a wig sheen spray or detangler spray will help.
  5. If your falls start to unravel, twist them in the way they were originally twisted, grab a hair dryer and blast the dread up close for a few seconds. Don't keep the hair dryer on it too long, some hair dryers get very hot and may cause the dread to melt or get crispy.
  6. Be gentle with your falls! They will last a long time! (Which means no moshpits or really violent concerts if you can't help it ^_^)

What do I do if my dreads have acquired a smoke or sweaty concert smell?
Hang your dreads out for a few days and let the fresh air get to them, "ferbreese" and scented detangler sprays will help.

My dreads still smell...Can I wash my falls? How?
Although it is not highly recommended, you can wash your falls, fill up a tub or a basin with colder luke warm water, put in a very small amount of MILD shampoo, or (non-bleach) laundry detergent. Let your falls soak for 15-30 mins. Then rinse them with cold water and hang them to dry. These instructions apply to dreadfalls, and straight hair falls. DO NOT wash straight hair falls with curled ends.

Can you make dread falls mounted on clips?
No. CypherLOX does not make falls mounted on clips due to durability.

Help! I purchased falls and I just cant get them in right...What am I doing wrong?
Practice! Practice! Practice! In no time you will be a fall install expert. If you have already checked the step by step fall directions on the HOW TO page, and you are still having trouble, please contact us and we will do our best to help. Remember - open-style bobby pins are a BIG help, they can be purchased in the Lox Shop.

How long will my falls last?
Falls will last a long time as long as you treat them nicely. Click here for tips.

Will wearing falls damage my hair?
If falls are worn in excess- this means wearing your falls every day, for weeks or years at a time- it could be possibly be harmful. A condition called traction alopecia could occur with some people due to constant pulling of the hair. The risk is very low and only occurs on some individuals, but here are some tips to prevent any serious problems:

  1. When wearing a pair of falls use the "X-Method" when you put on your falls. The X-Method is explained on the HOW TO page.
  2. Try changing your style once and a while. Switch from the position of a single fall to a pair and vice versa. This will insure that strain on the scalp isn't always in the same position.
  3. Don't wear your falls EVERY day, that is what extensions are for. Most people wear their falls a few times a week, for nights out, or at school for only portions of the day. Take them out while you sleep. We would hope you aren't trying to impress while your sleeping anyways, sleeping in them will also mess up your falls!
  4. If you have had any case of alopecia [hair loss] for any reason as a pre-existing condition, you can still wear falls without causing further damage. If this applies to you, we would strongly advise you to consult your doctor or dermatologist before wearing falls.
  5. Listen to what your body tells you! If you are getting more than just a small headache from wearing falls or anything similar contact me or your doctor. If you would like to read up any further on this subject, click here, here, or here.

I have dreads already...Can I still wear a hairpiece?
Of course! Dreadfalls especially can add volume and length to your real dreads. Just put your dreads in pigtails or a pony tail and follow the same instructions on the HOW TO page to put on falls. If you want something more permanent try single-looped dread extensions!

My elastics broke on my falls...help!
Don't Panic! If your elastics snap or your dreads need a tune up please contact us to set up a repair.

Extensions FAQ

How do you put in extensions?
There are many different methods and tutorials for installing single looped and double-ended dread extensions availible online, do a google.com search.

How long does my hair have to be to get them?
Since extensions are braided in, your hair must be at least 3 inches long for the extensions to hold to your hair. If your hair is very short the braids may loosen due to wear. So the longer your hair is, the better. It is suggested that you get extensions that are at least the length of your real hair or longer.

Will extensions damage my hair or make it fall out?
Alot of people ask if extensions will damage their hair after being installed. When removed after a few months, you will find a huge amount of hair that comes out with your extensions. BUT the hair that falls out is a build up of hair that would have normally shedded over the course of 2-3 months without extensions. Remember - your hair sheds over 100 strands a day, so after about 90 days times 100 strands of hair, that is what you will see when removing extensions. Although some people do report that their hair seems thinner after taking out extensions, it usually only effects 10% of your entire hair volume. Thinned hair will be noticeable enough to you but not to others, so don't worry! So this means all you guys and gals with outrageously thick hair, extensions may serve as a blessing!

What about permanent hair loss [alopecia]?
As far as permanent hair loss goes, wearing extensions in your hair constantly or for a seriously extended period of time could be possibly be harmful. A condition called traction alopecia could occur with some people due to constant pulling of the hair. This condition generally occurs when you wear your hair/extensions in the same formation after several years. It is mostly caused by very small, tight braiding or cornrows, which is very different from the extension installation method on the CypherLOX HOW TO page. The risk is very low and only occurs on some individuals. If you are getting more than just a small headache (which is normal) from wearing extensions or anything similar contact us or your doctor. If you would like to read up any further on this subject, click here, here, or here.

I have sensitive skin / scalp...Can I still get extensions?
Some people are burdened with extremely sensitive and touchy scalps. Extensions may not be the best idea if this is your case. Normally people with a sensitive scalp feel pain or discomfort by the slightest hair pullage. The only way to find out if extensions will bother you is to try them unfortunately. Do a test- Try putting in a few extensions or small mildly tight braids, and keep them in for 3-7 days and see how your scalp feels. Tug on them a bit, if you don't feel any pain or discomfort, or if you don't see any flakiness of the scalp, chances are you'll be fine with installing your extensions.

Can I wash my extensions? How?
Yes. It is really only necessary to wash the scalp, not so much the dreads. Try using a mild shampoo like "Suave: Daily Clarifying Shampoo" It is a clear shampoo in a clear bottle that you can find anywhere, and it usually runs about $0.99. Or simply dilute your own shampoo with water. Make sure you rinse your hair out very well, and let your hair drip dry. You should only have to wash your hair once a week. How do take my extensions out?

Can I re-use the extensions?
Yes! As long as they aren't extremely damaged from wear and you take them out carefully extensions can be reused. Wash them just like you would falls, twist and touch up with a hair dryer. They can be used as extensions again or even tied together to make dreadfalls.

What else should I know before getting extensions put in?
Wash your hair normally for a few days WITHOUT conditioner or conditioning shampoo. Braids will hold better to drier hair.

I have an undercut...Can I still get extensions?
Of course! Undercuts are actually even better if you are purchasing extensions, you'll only need half the amount!

Will you put in my extensions for me?
Please see the CypherLOX Services Page. We do offer extension installation services for people in the area. This includes things like double-enders, looped dreads, silky wrap dreads etc.... and even real dreads!

I don't live in your area...Where can I get extensions done?
You can do them yourself, see the HOW TO page. OR See if a friend or someone that knows how to weave/braid can help you. The last resort would be checking your phonebook for a salon. Some salons will install them for you but it can get very pricey.
